Fragile-Fatale, The Young Mamiwata is drawn from an Afro-Carib fantastic legend written by Patrick Chamoiseau.

Adapted in an interactive adventure game on CDROM and a computer-animated film, the saga is foreseen in several versions - French, Creole, English, Spanish – for a wide international distribution.

It’s the occasion to advance the Afro-Caribbean cultural patrimony, by means of its language, its history, its art of cooking, its traditional music, its humor and its art of living, so characteristic.

Through the character of Mami Wata, Caribbean mermaid, the subjects of the preservation of water and the respect of environment, vital concerns for all the planet, are approached in a playful way.

Humor, magic, sparkling and rich universe are the components of this magnificent odyssey!

Grand-Rivière, virtual harbour

One of the most important projects of the moment in Martinique: the modernization of the departmental harbour of Grand-Rivière, a fishing village situated at the northeast corner of Martinique. The General Council decided to strike the spirits asking Avantilles to create two virtual models: one of the actual harbour, one of the future harbour!

Which is this project of harbour, precisely?

Small village of fishermen, rather isolated on the Atlantic coast, subjected to important swells and deserted little by little by its young population which pains to take the changing, Grand-Rivière is seeking a new breath.
To start again its economy, the General Council decided to secure the place by creating a vast protective dam which will allow the revival of the activities of fishing but also accomodate pleasure boats and passengers transportation.
This highly technological project, which requires the work of three international companies, will put an end to the isolation of this village and will bring touristic and economic new perspectives.

Why a virtual model?

This project of more than 25 millions euros which spreads out over 2 years is very complex. It requires to be explained, not only to the local population, in particular to explain the need for the embarrassment caused during all the construction, but also to the persons external to the village, generally rather skeptics on the project feasibility.
The General Council had understand that, with a virtual model available on Internet, it could touch a wide range of people and could diffuse the most precise information on the question. And then, what could be better than a representation in 3D real time “to explain” the things!

What was you asked for?

To save the inheritance, the General Council thought that it would be useful to keep a memory of the actual Grand-Rivière, which is in addition a very picturesque village, before its littoral frontage is not modified.
Thanks to the data of the SIGMA (level lines, cadastral registration) and to the very precise land topographics datas we recreated the ground in 3D as well as the localization of the least building, low wall, staircase, etc. To accentuate realism, we took a photo of each frontage and all the objects appearing in the landscape (paved streets, urban furniture, shelters for boats, flowers stand, etc…). We then assembled the 3D scene in the most exhaustive possible way.
After that, we developed the real time application allowing to circulate inside the model, “as if one were there”. Some interactivities, like a plan of direct access and an animated trip on boat were added.

And for the future harbour?

A second model was to show the future Grand-Rivière.
With this intention, it was appropriate to have a common base for these 2 models: the part of the village which remains unchanged. Thus, for the second model, it was enough to create only the additive part, knowing that this one woukd evolve during the two years to come.
Today, only the infrastructures (the dam, the quays, the bridges) are defined and thus represented, thanks to the plans which the engineering and design department provided us. Progressively with the advanced project, we will achieve the model with the superstructures (harbour office, workshops, trade, etc…) and you will thus see gradually the future aspect of the harbour.

To communicate, which solution did you choose?

We chose the access of these two models on the Web. That means the optimization of the weight of the files and a work in low-poly, to allow a rapid access, even with a low rate connection, while keeping a good graphic quality.
You can notice it while going on www.portdegrandriviere.com

A last word on this project?

We are very proud if our models. This of the actual village will make it possible to keep an “alive” trace of this so charming part of Grand-Rivière, and to make it known in the whole world. As for the model of the future harbour, it allows already the inhabitants, but also all the curious people to realize the importance of this project and to perhaps come to make a stopover.
The continuation is to come with, soon, all the village, for you to prepare your holidays on the web ! Then, remain connected!

Virtual tour in Saint-joseph

Through this full 3D realization of a future business park, let's see how was the relationship with the client and the method that was chosen.

How did this project begin?

We were contacted by an urbanist from the CACEM, establishment gathering 4 cities of the center of Martinique: Fort-de-France, Schoelcher, Lamentin and Saint-Joseph. She was missionned by her supervisor, which had had the occasion to see our demos during a ministerial visit of our buildings, to examine closely the capabilities of Avantilles in term of innovating communication.
The field of Virtual Reality being new for her, we presented several 3D models as their many possible exploitations.

Which was the customer requirement?

Our town planner had to install a 8 ha agro-industrial park in the village of Saint-Joseph which it had asked the design to an engineering office. This one had carried out a map including the main ways, the car parks and various landscape spaces. The unit was, however, virgin of buildings.
What was important for the CACEM was to show the quality of the achievements and the services which it was able to offer to the companies there.
It was necessary thus to set up a precise, relevant and percussive communication both for the elected officials and the local population.

Which solution did you propose?

She chose, on our advices, an animated film proposing a walk inside the park completely arranged, accompanied by appropriate voiced-off commentaries explaining holding and outcomes of the project.
But, with this intention, it was necessary “to invent” agro-industrial, artisanal and services companies to simulate a park in full activity. This was for us the most exciting part of the job because we could then let express our creativity.

Which data were provided to you by the customer?

The engineering and design department provided us their numerical files representing the positioning of the roadway systems and their carriageway markings, the localization of the various vegetable species, of which much was unknown for us, and the site of urban furniture such as the benches, public lamps and bus stops.

How did you build the model?

Thanks to the topographic data of the SIGMA (Geographical Information System of MArtinique) got from the engineering departments of the General Council, we virtually recreated the pattern of the ground as well as part of the environment.
As for the buildings, we were inspired from existing ones; we spent much time to photograph supermarkets, gasoline stations and medical centres, but also purification stations and garbage collection aeras.
After having modelled and textured each element of the roadway system, vegetation and building, we put them together in the 3D scene. It remained to place here and there some characters and to animate some cars to make the model more alive.

How did you proceed the film?

In parallel, we built a storyboard and wrote the text of accompaniment, with the customer. We recorded the voice in a sound studio, then we calculated and assembled each sequence. Then followed a phase of compositing, because 2D sequences and special effects were necessary to link the whole.
A small music to support the action, some sound effects and a completely new universe occurred in the middle of the countryside of Martinique. We finished film on a very aesthetic night effect because one of the important topics was the safety of the place.

Which was the reaction of your customer?

They were very satisfied because the end product went beyond their hopes! They were quite simply bluffés by the realistic side of the platform. Moreover, all this work helped to raise the good questions and to continue their reflexion about this next installation.

Which is your feeling after that?

We were glad to note their pleasure while watching the film and that consolidated us in the idea that Virtual Reality is a major asset for the projects of town planning. It really makes it possible to figure out, much better than with plans, all the possibilities of a future establishment.
You can integrate the project in the existing environment and better realize the impact of its implantation. It is an incredible tool and it is reassuring to see that the customers realize that!

"Fort-de-France, 3D Capital City"

Fort-de-France, One of the richest cities of Great Caribbean, is the object of a great program of development and urban restoration, corresponding to a true desire of economic, commercial and artisanal revitalization.

The results is an expansion of building sites, made of demolitions, rehabilitations and new constructions about which the population wonders.

Avantilles raises a corner of the veil by presenting a portion of the downtown area around the future shopping centre Perrinon.

Walk in total immersion and discover all kinds of urban, patrimonial and cultural information. Notice the esthetics and the style of constructions, typical of our area.

This model is made for you: partners of this program, investors, people from Martinique in France and abroad and all those which are interested in the "foyal" culture.
